Cleo Morris McCarty

Cleo met her husband at a Valentine Party at the Houston Heights Church of Christ in 1927, where they were both members. They married later in the year on Nov. 26, 1927, and shared 50 years together, until he passed away on March 24, 1978. In 1935 Melvin went to work at Humble Oil (now Exxon Mobil) and moved to Baytown.

They were charter members of the Virginia St. Church of Christ in Baytown, which he helped to build, and later helped on the Missouri St. Church of Christ.

After his retirement from Exxon they were able to spend more time at their beach house in Matagorda, TX. They enjoyed fishing and long walks on the beach collecting many beautiful seashells which they created into unique framed pictures.

Cleo also enjoyed making her flowerbeds, at their home in Baytown, look pretty. She was an excellent seamstress and a very good cook, which her family always enjoyed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin J. McCarty; sons-in-law, Bill G. Green and Edward S. Cathriner Jr.

Cleo is survived by their three daughters, Charlene Bittick and husband Bruce of Ryan, OK, Edna Lou Green, and Melva Cathriner, both of Baytown, TX; grandchildren, Celeste Bittick McLean of Naples, FL, James Cathriner of Baytown, Chris Bittick of Waco, TX, Dana Green Gilbert of Baytown, Cynthia Bittick of Scottsdale, AZ, Edward S. Cathriner III of Baytown, Mel Bittick of Irving, TX, Delane Cathriner Maddux of Porter, TX, Melinda Cathriner Slay of Ridgeland, MS, and Stephen Cathriner of Moscow, Russia; several great grandchildren, and also several nieces and nephews, and a few special friends.

Visitation will be Thursday morning from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 11:45 a.m. at Brookside Memorial Park Cemetery on Lauder Rd. at 13401 Eastex Freeway in Houston, TX with minister Bill Ehlig officiating. In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice.
