Yvonne “Vonnie” Fassitt Thomas, born February 6th, 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana to the late George and Adele (Nelson) Fassitt, passed away peacefully at her home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on January 12th, 2013. She was 86. Mrs. Thomas was married to the late Rodney J. Thomas Jr., sadly lost during Hurricane Katrina, for 56 years. A lifelong Catholic, first, in her youth, as a member of Holy Ghost Parish in uptown New Orleans, then, as she raised her family in Pontchartrain Park subdivision, a member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in New Orleans, and post Hurricane Katrina while living with her daughter Charlene and late sister – Alice, as a member of St. Jude Parish of Baton Rouge. She was a graduate of McDonough 35 High School and attended Xavier University of Louisiana. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. In addition to being a devoted wife, a stay at home mom to her four children, and a devout church member, she enjoyed sewing, gardening and reciting poetry. She loved cooking and serving her meals to all who visited her home and was especially known for her gumbo, shrimp stew, mirlitons and other New Orleans cuisine. An avid card player and socialite, Mrs. Thomas played Bridge regularly as a member of the “Clickerettes” and “Cardettes“ Bridge Clubs, Bonanza as a member of the “12 0’Clock Loafers,” and most recently, Pokeno as a member of the “Orleanians Pokeno Group”. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her 7 lovely grandchildren of whom she was very proud. She is survived by her sister, Grace Fassitt Oliver of Philadelphia, PA; children: Rodney (Tracey) Thomas of Dallas, TX, Charlene (Alphonzo) Wilson of Baton Rouge, LA, Derek (Donna) Thomas of Honolulu, HI, and Trina (Tyrone) Wilson of Allen, TX; grandchildren: Courtney, Chelsea, and Alphonzo Wilson, II; Adelle and Kristina Thomas; and Tyra and Tori Wilson; sister-in-law Beatrice Gremillion of San Jose, CA; brother-in-law Henry (Virginia) Thomas of Miami, FL; special life long friend, Blanche Andrews of Humble, TX and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, husband Rodney and sister Alice, she is preceded in death by siblings: sister Mary Fassitt Murphy and brothers John, Joseph and George Fassitt. Visitation will begin at 10 AM on Saturday, January 26th 2013 at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 4700 Pineda Street, New Orleans, LA 70126, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11 AM officiated by Reverend Douglas Doussan. Interment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, 4000 Norman Mayer Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70122. Arrangements entrusted to Greenoaks Funeral Home of Baton Rouge, LA.
