Robert William Fullerton, Sr., age 89, died in Mobile, Alabama on December 18, 2022 following a brief illness. He was born in Correctionville, Iowa May 7, 1933 and baptized as an infant in Victoria, Texas in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Robert moved to Baton Rouge in 1946 and graduated from Catholic High School in 1950. He then attended and graduated from LSU with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in January 1954 and with a 2nd Lt Commission in the U.S. Air Force.
Following graduation he reported for active duty at Lackland AFB in Texas. Robert completed navigation school at Ellington AFB in July 1956 where he received his “wings” and was assigned to Electronic Countermeasures School at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi. After completing ECM school he was assigned to B-52 training at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington. He completed his military service in January 1955 and went to work as an engineer with General Dynamics in Fort Worth, Texas until 1962. During that time he attended night school at SMU and received a MSML degree. He worked as an engineering specialist at Curtis Wright Electronics on the B-58 Navigation Simulation and then joined the Chrysler Space Division in New Orleans as an aerospace engineer. During that time he attended night school at Tulane University and received his MBA. He eventually worked in the marketing department at Chrysler, traveling throughout the U.S. until Chrysler’s space business ended. He then managed the engineering and maintenance of facilities at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility for two years before joining David Volkert and Associates engineering firm as Vice-President, managing its New Orleans operations until 1989. Robert spent the final years of his career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans and retired in 1997.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lynda Sage Fullerton of Mobile, Alabama; children, Elizabeth Wilder (Don), Robert Fullerton, II (Brandy), Andrea Oser (Kevin); step-children, Julie Ralph (Andy) and Brad Hatcher (Lynn); ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Robert is preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth O’Neill Fullerton; parents, Roy and Opal Fullerton; sister, Frances Prestridge; and grand-daughter, Sarah Oser. A graveside service will be held at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70815, on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at 10 am, with visitation beginning at 9:30 am.
