Richard John Smith, Sr. "Jerry", a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2024, in Baton Rouge, LA at the age of 83. Born on March 7, 1941, in Milwaukee, WI, Jerry was a man of unwavering faith and boundless enthusiasm for life's adventures.
His journey of faith began in New Orleans, where he attended Jesuit High School, graduating in 1959. Jerry then went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1963, all while serving in the Naval Reserves. His dedication to his country was evident as he graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1964, and faithfully served in the US Navy until 1967. Even after active duty, Jerry remained in the Naval Reserves until 1976, a testament to his patriotism.
In 1964, Jerry married the love of his life, Dianne Blue, and they embarked on a beautiful 61-year journey together. Their love story was one for the ages, blessed with two children, Rick and Beth, and later enriched by four cherished grandchildren: Ricky and Megan Smith and Rock and Grace Thompson.
Jerry's career in gymnastics coaching began at Northwestern State University, where he helped lead national championship teams. He continued his remarkable coaching journey at Old Dominion University and LSU, where his influence shaped young athletes' lives. Alongside coaching, Jerry pursued an EdD degree, driving him to excel further in his chosen fields.
After a thriving career, Jerry and Dianne embraced a semi-retired serene country life, running the Asphodel Inn and Restaurant. His zest for life and love of aviation led him to join Executive Aviation, where he worked as a Financial Analyst until finally retiring. Jerry's spirit of adventure was matched by his passion for aviation, hunting, fishing, tennis, and golf. Whether aboard a plane or on horseback as a part-time cowboy, Jerry was always on the move, embracing every moment with joy and enthusiasm.
He was not only a man of action but also source of strength to his family and his community. His Christian faith guided him throughout his life, and he generously shared his wisdom, listening and counseling his family and friends. Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Stanley Dale Smith and Lorretta Agnes Suminski and sister, Kathleen Smith Able. He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne; siblings, Michael Dale Smith, and Monica Smith Jackson; and of course, his children and grandchildren who will continue to cherish his memory.
Jerry's funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 11 AM at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street, Baton Rouge, LA 70802.
In remembrance of our dear loved one, we echo the words of 2 Timothy 4:7-8, knowing Jerry fought the good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith. He leaves us with the promise of a crown of righteousness from the Lord, signifying a life well-lived and a legacy cherished by all who knew him.
