Reid Boteler Bateman, a Baton Rouge native and life long resident, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 27, 2023 at the age of 61. An amazingly compassionate person, Reid used his incomparable wit and humor to bring people together. The joy and light he brought to everyone that knew and loved him has left a legacy of memories and stories that will long be told. Reid celebrated life daily and was always using his gifts and talents to help others particularly his family and friends. He never met a stranger and was a connector of all people. Reid had many accomplishments as he graduated Episcopal High School in 1980 where he still holds the school record in the 100 yard dash, a fact he boasted about regularly since the race is now measured in meters. He attended LSU and graduated Millsaps College and then earned his law degree from Loyola University School of Law. Reid served as law clerk for Judge Paul B Landry and then Judge William B Brown. In addition to his private law practice, Reid was an Administrative Law Judge for the state of Louisiana and a member of the Louisiana Bar Association. Additionally, Reid served on the Louisiana State University Dean’s Advisory Council-Libraries. He was a founding member of the Monkey Business Party, a member of Le Cercle de Bacchus, Krewe of Achilles, and a member of the Gamma Iota chapter of Sigma Chi. Reid sat on the board of Big Buddy Program where he served as President and participated in the program’s Dancing with the Stars event. He was most recently the 2023 Assistant Chairman of The Baton Rouge Assembly Ball and was Incoming Chairman. Reid had many hobbies and passions in life. Among them, he adored fowl hunting, loved all things Tom Jones and collected Marvel comic books. He loved Friday nights with his wife and crew at Marina’s Mexican Grill, weekly visits to Dearman’s and any excuse to hang out with family and friends. Reid is preceded in death by his parents, Dr and Mrs. Ernest D Bateman (Sara Boteler). He is survived by his loving wife Ashley and daughter Rebecca, as well as his two siblings Leslie Bateman Brennan and her two children Sara (Andrew Trechsel) and Richard and Lauren Bateman Bailey (Lionel), and their three children Barrett (Alex), Suzanne and Brent. Reid was a connoisseur of vanilla ice cream, a Titanic aficionado, a history buff and prankster extraordinaire, but nothing meant more to him than his wife and daughter. They were the center of his universe, and he celebrated every moment with them whether watching movies at home or on one of their family trips. Their family life encompassed many friends whom Reid considered family. Everyone has a story to tell about Reid because he made such an effort with everyone in his life, and so we know Reid will live on through those he loved and those who love him. Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 3 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at Greenoaks Funeral Home. Monday, December 4 at First Presbyterian Church, visitation will be held from 10:30-12, service at 12 and burial to follow.
