Ann Mitchell died peacefully in her sleep on January 18th. Ann grew up one of five children in a small town in Mississippi. She was a southern girl at heart, spending most of her life in Baton Rouge (although she briefly lived in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil). Ann excelled in school, skipping 3 grades and entering college at age 15. Along the way she was voted queen of both junior and senior high. She majored in religion and did missionary work in the Tennessee hills.
Ann admitted that she had her sister sneak out to see what kind of car he was driving before their first date, but found true love with her husband “Dee.” The pink Chevy convertible did the trick. They thought their family complete with their children Linda and Deaton. In her 40s, Ann got the “best surprise ever” when she started eating watermelon and drinking buttermilk—something that hadn’t happened since her last pregnancy decades earlier. Along came beautiful Heather!
When Deaton and Linda were young, Ann and Dee were officers in the RockHound Association and experienced camping all over the US, even spending a full summer camping in Florida. Ann was a bone marrow donor, which allowed her brother to live a few more years, and she cared for her husband, Dee, for over a decade through a long illness. Later in life, she enjoyed lunch out with friends (especially if crab au gratin was on the menu), chatting with friends and relatives on the phone, and spending time at church.
Ann is survived by her three children, three sisters, three grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. As she used to say, “not an ugly one in the bunch!”
Visitation will be held at Baton Rouge First United Methodist Church at 930 North Blvd. on Friday, January 26th at 11AM, followed by services at 12PM, and then a reception at Heather’s home.
