Merietta is survived by her husband, Dr. Scott Norton; her children, Kirkley and Lynley Norton; and her brothers; Fritz Spencer III and Blair Spencer. She is preceded in death by her father, Fritz Spencer Jr.; her mother, Lela Holmes Spencer; and her sister, Martha Spencer Muenzler.
Merietta was born in Baton Rouge on June 12, 1962, to Lela and Fritz Spencer Jr. She graduated from Louisiana State University in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in Business. Merietta graduated with her Juris Doctorate from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University in 1991. As an undergraduate, she participated in Tiger Band and served as choreographer for the LSU Color Guard.
Merietta married Scott Norton on August 18, 1984. On October 6, 1995, and October 25, 1999, respectively, she welcomed two daughters.
Merietta began working for the Louisiana Secretary of State in 1999 and served as General Counsel starting in May 2000. She recently received Honorable Mention for the 2020-2021 Charles E. Dunbar, Jr. Career Service Award which recognizes outstanding civil service employees in Louisiana.
Merietta was a devoted wife and mother, an accomplished attorney, and a lifelong LSU sports fan. She enjoyed going to sporting events and traveling to the beach annually, where she loved the sound of the ocean. She attended Broadmoor Baptist Church in Baton Rouge since childhood. Merietta will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.
