Mary V. Yocum

Victoria Mary Marchio Yocum, wife of the late Glenn Allen Yocum, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 15, 2007, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born in 1918. A devout Catholic and a member of the Order of Secular Franciscans, she now lives in peace with her Lord and her dear family and friends who have gone before her. Visiting at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Thursday, May 17, from 1 p.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 p.m. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Mary was born and raised in Joliet, Ill., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Anthony Marchio, and the youngest of seven siblings. She married Glenn Yocum in 1941, and together for many years they owned and operated Joliet Floor Coverings, where Mary was a partner and bookkeeper. After moving to Baton Rouge in 1967, Mary found a second rewarding career as a Title I school aide for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system. She treasured her time with "her" children and devoted herself to improving their lives through education. After her retirement in the early 1980s, Mary devoted herself to her family, especially her grandchildren, who will always remember and be grateful for their "Grams." Mary is survived by her two children, William J. Yocum of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Thyre Yocum McMains of Baton Rouge, and their spouses, Patricia Yocum and Jay McMains. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Bradley Allan Yocum and Shannon Yocum Brewer of Phoenix, Ashley Yocum MacLean of Flagstaff, Ariz., Emily Ann McMains Brown, Julius Greer "Jake" McMains Jr. and Mary Thyre "Tess" McMains, all of Baton Rouge, and William McMains of New Orleans; and six great-grandchildren, Bradley, William and Makayla Yocum and John Henry and Caroline Brewer of Phoenix, and Eileen and Sarah MacLean of Flagstaff. She will be greatly missed by all the children who loved her dearly. Mary is also survived by her beloved brother, Thomas Marchio of Joliet; and many nieces and nephews, especially Michael Marchio, BettiAnn Marchio Perona, Marlyn Marchio Kesckses, JoAnne Marchio DeBarbera and Thomas Marchio Jr., all of Joliet, Rose Marie McGuire of Willowbrook, Ill., and Donna Chiodo Goryl of Muskegon, Mich. They, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends will never forget their beloved Aunt Mary. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip Anthony and Elizabeth Marchio; husband, the late Glenn Allan Yocum; half sisters, Caroline Chiodo, who was of Muskegon, and Carmella Gentile; and brothers, Jake, Joseph and Sam Marchio, all of Joliet. The family would like to thank and recognize the warm and lasting friendship of Mary's special helpers, Mrs. Ivy McClain, Mrs. Vicki Stansberry, Mrs. Desa Ike, Mrs. Sarah Pollard and Mrs. Lisa White for providing support to all the family as well as Mary, and who shared all the ups and downs, the prayers and the blessings, and gave such incredible love and service in their special relationship with Mary and all the family.
