Lois Marie Humphreys LeBlanc age 98, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. “Gigi” is now with The Lord and by all accounts is sharing her thoughts on the matter with Him directly.
She was born on October 11, 1916 in Watervalley, Mississippi. Marie graduated from Taylor High School, then on to the Bramlette School of Nursing. As a young Mississippi nurse (and long before HIPPA would prevent such things), Marie reveled in the care provided to the noted author, William Faulkner. She was the inspiration of a character in Faulkner’s work entitled “Men Working,” or so the story goes. She was an electric storyteller.
Yet, her calling lay further south , and she made Louisiana her home. To explain such an extended stay for a Mississippi Baptist, she offered only, “When a Mississippi girl gets that mud between her toes….”
She served as the Labor and Delivery nursing supervisor at
Earl K. Long for twelve years where she probably helped to deliver some of you, including her own grandson. Marie also worked as a private duty nurse and made many life-long friends in the process, including the Charlie Butler family. One of her notable patients was Arch Bishop Joseph Rummel. Marie nursed him after a fall in 1960 and they remained good friends. She was generous with her time and served others in too many ways to count, be it cooking, sewing, or her great gift of conversation. Marie had many friends, but among them, three stand out; Juanita Zeno, a fellow nurse, Sophie Braud, and Sis Dimattia.
Marie worked at the old Lady of Lake Hospital for many years and was able to work for several of Baton Rouge’s finest doctors, including Dr. Dan Fourrier, Dr. Juluis Mullens, and Dr. Sterling Albritton.
She is survived by her children and spouses; Joe and Diane LeBlanc, Hilda and Ernest Harthcock, Eddie and Jean LeBlanc, sister-in-law Sue Humphreys, brother-in-law, James Robert Livingston and daughter-in-law Toni LeBlanc. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and spouses: Patty and Dewey Davis, Michelle Rayborn, Michael LeBlanc, Steven LeBlanc, Timmy LeBlanc, Derrick LeBlanc, Joey and Leslie LeBlanc, Darrin and Devaney LeBlanc, Chad and Rachael Harthcock, Erin Marie and Zack Aspegren, Chantelle and Jason Jennings, Collin and Melissa LeBlanc, Christen and Laura LeBlanc, and Chase LeBlanc. Marie had 39 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Annie Laurie Humphreys, husband Joe Leonce LeBlanc , son Pat LeBlanc, brother Ralph Humphreys, sisters Louise Benz, and Kathy Livingston, and grandson Russell Wade Harthcock.
The pallbearers are Chad Harthcock, Jason Jennings, Collin LeBlanc, Joey LeBlanc, Mack Truluck, and Judge Darrell White.
Honorary pallbearers are Zack Aspegren, Ernest Harthcock, Christen LeBlanc, Chase LeBlanc, Darrin LeBlanc, Donnie Polito, and George Schamberger.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Landmark Nursing Home. You all loved her well.
