Lucile Holmes Martin

Lucile Holmes Martin, 98, of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 6, 2023. She was born Catherine Lucile Holmes on February 20, 1925 in Fairfield, Alabama to Jacob Henry Holmes and Mattie Ethel Kennedy Holmes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 66 years Charles Lee Martin, her sister Margaret Evelyn Holmes Werth, her brother John Jacob Holmes, and her daughter Barbara Renee “Babs” Martin. She is survived by her son Dr. Rick Martin (Mary), her daughter Marilyn Martin (Tom), her granddaughter Erica Martin Brown (Michael), her grandson Charlie Martin (Rowan), her two great-grandsons William and Harrison Brown, and her niece Marguerite Werth Wire (Dick). She graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama in 1946 with a degree in Commerce where she was class president her junior and senior years. In 1948 she married Charles Martin, a Navy veteran and architectural student at Auburn University. His architectural career took them to Clarksville, Tennessee; Lafayette, Louisiana; Alexandria, Louisiana; and finally to LSU in Baton Rouge. After the birth of her first child she devoted her life to raising a family and volunteering for activities at her churches and her children’s schools. She loved to make clothes for herself and her daughters as well as costumes for The Baton Rouge Ballet Theater. At First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge she was instrumental in designing and fabricating the beautiful banners that hang in the sanctuary every Sunday. Because of this and her other volunteer activities in the church and community she received the United Methodist Women’s Service award in 1990. She was president of the Baton Rouge Ballet in 1972 and was an honorary initiate of Phi Mu sorority. She loved travelling with her husband and enjoyed trips to Cape Town in South Africa, the Panama Canal, the pyramids in Egypt, and most of Europe. She loved to paint and one of her paintings placed in the top 10 in an LSU Vet School fund-raiser in 2009. She loved playing the piano at church and home, especially her mother’s 1901 upright piano. She will be missed by many. Her funeral will be Saturday, April 29 at the First United Methodist Church of Baton Rouge with visitation beginning at 10:00 followed by a service at 11:00. Burial after the service will be in Greenoaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The First United Methodist Church, the Hospice of Baton Rouge, or another charity.
