Herbert Joseph Gomez Sr., a native of a Donaldsonville and a resident of Greenwell Springs, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at the age of 95. He was a US Army WWII veteran- construction of the Alaskan Highway, a member of the Red Ball Express 3rd phase at Omaha Beach, and a DDay veteran. Herbert was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Exxon Piney Woods Annuitant Club where he was retired as a Riverboat Engineer. He was a loving father, brother and grandfather who will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by seven children, Herbert Gomez Jr. and wife Sherry, Brenda McGovern, Debby Gomez, David Gomez Sr. and wife Lynne, Jeff Gomez and wife Kim, Lili Gomez, and Gay Wilson and husband Randall; two brothers, Raymond Gomez and Gerald Bercegeay; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen Monson Gomez; parents, Lily and Adam Gomez; and son, Robert "Bobby" Gomez. Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 from 5pm until 8 pm and resume on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church from 9:30 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Scott McGovern, Chad McGovern, David Gomez Jr., Christopher Gomez, Jonathan Menck, and Adam Taylor.
