Helen Young

Helen Duda Young passed away peacefully on August 28, 2023, at the age of 90. She was born December 19, 1932, in New York, NY, to the late Sam & Mary Duda. Helen was a graduate of Washington Irving High School, New York, NY, Class of 1950. She graduated from Bellevue School of Nursing, New York, NY, Class of 1953. Helen worked at New York Eye & Ear Infirmary & in San Francisco, CA, at Franklin Hospital, until she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps as a First Lt., in 1959. She completed her basic training at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. She was transferred to The Presidio in San Francisco, CA, & promoted to Captain. In 1963, she was assigned to the 44th Mash Unit in Seoul, Korea. Helen’s next assignment was back in her hometown of New York City at Ft. Jay on Governors Island. It was there that she met the love of her life, Col. Fletcher Robert Young. They were married on June 2, 1964, in New York, NY, for 57 years until his death in November of 2021. Following her years of service, she devoted herself to raising her family at Army bases overseas & in the states, before finally settling down in Baton Rouge, LA, where she has resided since 1975. Helen is survived by her children, Robert Young (Lisa Champagne), Richard Young, Donald Young (Andi), Susan Young Donahue Lemoine (Dominick), & William Young; grandchildren, Kelsey Donahue Marshall (C.J.), Riley Donahue, Brody, Cameron, & Drew Young. Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Col. Fletcher Robert Young; parents, Sam & Mary Duda; & brothers, William & John Duda. Visitation will be at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 11441 Goodwood Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA, on Thursday, August 31, 2023, from 10am until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA.
