Emily Jane “EJ” Hanchey McCune, 77, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2021 after a long battle with corticobasal degeneration, a Parkinson Plus Syndrome. She was born on November 16, 1944 in DeRidder Louisiana. EJ graduated from DeRidder High School in 1962 and later received her bachelor’s degree at Louisiana State University in 1966. She later earned a master’s degree and a plus 30 Educational Specialist Degree from Southeastern Louisiana University. EJ taught for 33 years at the following schools: DeRidder Elementary School, Broadmoor Elementary, Trafton Academy and Chapel Trafton (The Dunham School), and Freshwater Elementary School. She has been a resident of Baton Rouge since 1966. EJ was an active and longtime member of Broadmoor Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder and a founding member of the CGT Organization. She was a member and past regent of the Heirome Gaines Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary organization for women educators, and the P.E.O. Sisterhood which provides educational opportunities for female students.
EJ is survived by her children, Michelle McCune Sorrells and husband Michael Sorrells of Baton Rouge, and Steven McCune and whis wife Kendra Foy McCune of Franklinton, grandchildren Ashlynn Sorrells, Aubrey Sorrells, Sawyer McCune and Sinclaire McCune, and brother Eugene Hanchey of Sulpher, LA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mary Henry McCune, parents Leo and Archie Maud Williamson Hanchey of DeRidder, LA and brother, Carl Hanchey of Lake Charles, LA.
EJ wanted to give special thanks to Audubon Hospice, Amedysis Hospice Services, The Crossing of Clarity Hospice, Dr. Kevin Babin, Dr. Gerald Dynes, and Dr. Thad Broussard as well as her wonderful caregivers, Kathy Lee, Joycelyn Gaines and Barbara Stewart. EJ also wanted to acknowledge her college friends and travel buddies, Bill and Diane Lloyd and Connie Button, and long-time friends, Kris Renfroe, Susan Weise, Jeanie Bastin, Ben and Debbie Files, Marvin and JoAnn O’Neal and her bridge club friends for their ongoing love and support.
Visitation will be held at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church, 9340 Florida Blvd. Baton Rouge, LA 70815, from 11:00am until funeral service time of 12:00pm
