Charles Lee Martin passed away Friday, December 26, 2014, at 7:20 a.m. after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born on November 3, 1924, in Gadsden, Alabama. He grew up in Fairfield, Alabama, and graduated from Fairfield High School. After attending one year at Auburn University, he joined thehttp://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/navy/?personid=173623173&affiliateID=1382" id="InlineMicrositeLink_Navy" target="_blank" title="Visit Navy Memorial Site to see similar profiles">U.S. Navyand served three years, with part of that time on the USS Xanthus. At the end ofhttp://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/ww2/?personid=173623173&affiliateID=1382" id="InlineMicrositeLink_WWII" target="_blank" title="Visit WWII Memorial Site to see similar profiles">World War II, he returned to Auburn and graduated with a Bachelor's of Architecture in 1950. He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. While attending Auburn, he married Lucile Holmes of Fairfield, Alabama. After moving to Clarksville, Tennessee, and then to Alexandria, Louisiana, Charles accepted the position of University Architect of the LSU System in 1965, and he and his family settled in Baton Rouge, where Charles lived for nearly 50 years. He retired as Vice President Emeritus of the LSU System after 35 years. Charles was preceded in death by his father Fred Novell Martin, his mother Ada Barnard Martin, his sisters Margaret Ann Martin and Mary Sue Jayne, and his daughter Barbara "Babs" Martin of Baton Rouge. He is survived by his wife of 66 years; his son Rickey Lee Martin, D.D.S., of Baton Rouge and wife Mary Heath Martin; his daughter Marilyn Holmes Martin Suing of Fredericksburg, Texas and husband Tom; his granddaughter Erica Leigh Martin of Houston, Texas and fiancé Michael Brown; his grandson Charles Harold Martin of Baton Rouge; and many nieces and nephews in Alabama. Charles, known to his grandchildren as "Big Daddy," enjoyed golf, traveling and LSU football. He was a life-long Methodist and member of First United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge and attended the Kum Dubl Sunday School Class. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, at noon at First United Methodist Church located at 930 North Boulevard, Baton Rouge, with visitation from 10 a.m to noon. The burial will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home located at 9595 Florida Boulevard following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church and The Hospice of Baton Rouge. Thanks to The Hospice of Baton Rouge, Dr. Minksy, Dr. McCanless, Dr. Rodney, Dr. Johnson, and all the nurses and caretakers who assisted him in this difficult time.
