Carolyn attended Dufrocq Elementary School, Baton Rouge Junior High, and Baton Rouge High (1957), and Louisiana State University, where she earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education. She was a member of Phi Mu sorority, Kappa Kappa Iota teaching sorority, and founding member of Felicity Study Club. For 30 years she taught elementary-age children, often in underserved schools, where she gave so many young kids a solid, caring start for the years of learning to come. Carolyn sustained multiple, life-long friendships with kindness and love, especially with her high school group of Anne Fogleman McCain, Patsy Reagin Peabody, and Georgene Cannon Gordon. They were present for one another’s big events—weddings and babies and milestone birthdays—and the everyday small ones—card games, lunches, long phone calls, and inside jokes. Her family was the love of her life, her children and grandchildren, with whom she loved to play games, read books, and take adventures in the Gran Van. She will be remembered for many things, especially for her love and kindness to all who knew her and for her sense of humor, which could be irreverent and kept everyone laughing.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents Zelma Oldham Engelhardt and Herman George Engelhardt. She is survived by her children, Amy Wiese Forbes (Andrew), John Cavin Wiese Jr., and Molly Wiese Morris (David), grandchildren John Cavin Wiese, III, Gabe Wiese, Caleb Wiese, Alex Forbes, and Claire Forbes, and numerous cousins.
