Bogdan Stanislaw Oporowski, aged 64, passed away on April 7, 2023. He was born in Poland on September 13, 1958, to Maria Oporowska and Mieczysław Oporowski. He married Loc Stewart in 1996, and they shared 26 years of marriage together.
Bogdan was a talented Professor of Mathematics passionate about understanding and researching everything and sharing his knowledge with others. He received his undergraduate studies from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland, and earned his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1989. He then joined Louisiana State University (LSU) Mathematics Department, where he became a full professor and enriched the department by mentoring and graduating 10 Ph.D. students.
Bogdan's love for mathematics was matched by his mastery of photography, videography, music, and table tennis. His photographs were prominently featured on the LSU Mathematics Department website, and on many websites showcasing Louisiana's historical buildings. As a beloved member of the Baton Rouge Table Tennis Club, Bogdan not only competed and placed in tournaments but also coached his teammates. He had a passion for music that spanned decades, and his eclectic taste ranged from Bjork, Pink Floyd, and Pat Metheny.
Bogdan was a devoted family man who made time to FaceTime with his mother in Poland every Saturday. He was a loving and patient husband who supported and encouraged his wife's passions and treated his stepchildren as his own. His friends, colleagues, students, and teammates remember him as a kind, highly respected person who was a significant part of their lives.
Bogdan's quick wit and dry humor were his most endearing qualities, which he mixed with his fiery intellect and gentle delivery, creating warm bonds with everyone he met—his extended family.
