Bernice Irene Healy, 96, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, died on September 8, 2023 after a brief illness. She was born in Wyandotte, Oklahoma in 1926. After graduating from Wyandotte High she moved to Wichita, Kansas, where she met and married the love of her life, Charles, in 1948. Together they raised eight children.
The family moved to Baton Rouge in 1970 where Bernice made many lifelong friends. Bernice was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. She was a perpetual adorer, a member of the Association of the Perpetual Rosary, the World Apostolate of Fatima, Parish Bereavement Committee, Altar Linen Committee, Legion of Mary, and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher. She was a member of the Junior League and an American Red Cross Volunteer.
She worked for more than twenty years at LSU in the Co-op Extension Service, Entomology Department, and International Student Affairs.
In 2013 she moved to Williamsburg Senior Living Community, where she quickly made new friends. She loved to entertain. Ageless, spry, and active, she never slowed down, participating in the many social activities offered including the Book and Rosary Clubs.
Preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Dora Zebert; her brothers, Leonard, Donald, Otis and Harold Zebert; her sister, Zelma Zebert; her grandsons, Charles Soley, Jacob Arason and Jack Bowling. Bernice is survived by her sister, Nadine Woodall, her daughters, Anne Healy (Bruce Elmore), Jane Arason (Jon), Alicia Healy, Helen Soley (Reid), Jean Bowling (David), and Ruth Thompson (David); her sons, Charles Healy (Renee) and Emmet Healy (Melissa); grandchildren, Paul Peffer, Carey Arason, Dashiell Stewart, Carolyn and Angela Soley, Emmet and Alex Bowling, Aubrey Zuelke, Victoria Healy, Charles and Helen Claire Thompson, Aidan, Emmet, Jr., William, and Kathleen Healy; great grandchildren, Paige Boudreaux, Victor Paul Roth, and several nieces and nephews.
The Rosary will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023 at Williamsburg Senior Living Community, 5445 Government St., Baton Rouge. The Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave., Baton Rouge followed by the funeral mass at 1:30 p.m.
