Alvin Leo Ballard passed away on October 23, 2018. He was 75. He is leaving behind his devoted, beloved wife of 57 years, Katie Cannon Ballard, a brother, Bruce Ballard (Sherry) and a sister Rita Wilson (Jerry). He is also survived by four nieces on his side, Brandy Rush, Burgundy Cummings, Tammy Hall and Donna Bowden and an aunt, Winnie Deese. Alvin had numerous nephews and nieces on Katie’s side but he had a special nephew Glen Carroll, who he treated like a son.
Alvin was a roofing contractor for more than thirty years (starting with his Dad’s company, Joseph LEO Ballard Roofing) until his retirement in 1996. But his passion was in his skill to take things apart, repair them, and put them back together. He could fix almost anything. He repaired car motors and even built vehicles from scratch. Some of his other talents included painting on canvas, wood carving, upholstering and building and flying model airplanes. He was also a carpenter and a welder and could build anything he set his mind on. Alvin had a workshop behind his home where he spent many hours doing all these things he enjoyed so much. Alvin could always be counted on to jump in if anyone had a problem and help solve it.
In his last days he reflected on all the things he had done in his life and was happy and satisfied. It was a full life. Alvin was admired, respected and loved and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Funeral visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Boulevard on Thursday, October 25, 2018, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm with burial to follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers are his good friends Charlie Dedon, Marvin Wooster and John Talkington as well as Glen Carroll, Paul Cummings and Brendan Rush.
Special thanks to Griswold Home Care and Canon Hospice for their special care.
