Alice Duke Akins Pope passed from this life on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at the age of 100 and was a native and resident of Baton Rouge. Alice was from a large and loving family and although she was not blessed with children, the void was filled by her numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was a realtor for 20 years. During World War II, she was a Red Cross Gray Lady and continued her hospital volunteer work at Ochsner’s in New Orleans and, later in Baton Rouge, at Woman’s Hospital and The Baton Rouge General. She also enjoyed being a member of the Geology Auxiliary at LSU. Alice had a love for interior decorating, gourmet cooking, traveling, and gardening. She loved dancing and belonged to the Frolickers Dance Club.
Alice is survived by her siblings, Wiley F. Duke, Jr. (Audrey), Benjamin Duke, Beverly Tucker, Margaret Farmer, and Judy Newby (Don); stepsons, David “Rusty” Pope and Mark Pope, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her first husband of 41 years, Leslie C. Akins, and her second husband of 15 years, David E. Pope; parents, Wiley F. Duke, Sr. and Mamie Hinson Duke; and siblings, Willie E. Duke, Louise Materiste, William “Bill” Duke, Peggy Stockwell, Jane “Dutchie” Duke, June Dodd, Jack Duke, and Earl “Bobby” Duke.
Visitation will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., in Baton Rouge, on Thursday, July 13, 2023, from 10am until the funeral service at 12:00pm. Burial will immediately follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
