Alfred Benton Davis, also known as ‘Coach' or ‘DD', was a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was born on November 1, 1934 to the union of Joseph W. Davis Sr. and Maude J. Davis. He gave his life to Christ at an early age, where he was baptized at Mount Zion First Baptist Church.
Alfred graduated in the Class of 1953 from Southern Lab High School where he was an outstanding basketball player. He later attended Southern University where he received a B.S. Degree in Secondary Education, played basketball and participated in the ROTC.
On June 30, 1957, Alfred married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Lee Freeman of Baton Rouge. To this union they welcomed their three daughters - Shari V. Davis of Houston, TX; Deidre D. Carrier of Houston, TX; and Margolyn N. Davis of Grand Prairie, TX.
Alfred furthered his academic studies at Southern pursuing a Master‘s degree in Secondary Education plus 30 hours. He joined the United States Army, where he served in Germany for 2 years as a Peace Officer and Radio Operator.
After leaving the army, he was employed by East Baton Rouge Parish School Board to work at Scotlandville High School as a Social Studies and Physical Education teacher. During his tenure, he coached basketball and tennis. He later transferred to Zachary High School to teach Civics and World History. Alfred completed 27 years in the EBR Parish school system before retiring in 1987.
Alfred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend devoted to coaching, teaching and helping others. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, cooking, golfing, horseracing and watching sports. He was a member of the Capitol City Golf Association where he held a position in public relations.
Alfred departed this life at his home on Friday, May 7, 2010. Cherishing his memories are his loving wife of 52 years, Sarah F. Davis of Baton Rouge, LA; his devoted sister Doris D. Fields of Niagara Falls, NY; his daughters, Shari V. Davis of Houston, TX; Deidre D. Carrier of Houston, TX; and Margolyn N. Davis of Grand Prairie, TX; one son-in-law, Floyd G. Carrier of Houston, TX; one granddaughter, Bless A. Carrier and one grandson Treat M. Carrier. He also has four sister-in-laws; Mable S. Davis of Buffalo, NY; Valeria M. Marrioneaux of Columbia, TN; Delores F. Davis of Bluffton, SC; and Elizabeth F. Brown of Detroit, MI; three brother-in-laws, Dr. Stuart H. Freeman of Baton Rouge, LA; Kevin A. Freeman of Baton Rouge, LA; and Joseph C. Brown of Detroit, MI . Also cherishing his memories are his devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Joseph W. Davis Jr. and Marshall L. Davis; a sister, Maud M. Davis; a brother-in-law, Willie C. Fields, Sr.; and an adopted sister and friend Helen C. Means.
Alfred’s advice, loyalty, sense of humor and willingness to help in the time of need will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
