Harry Lee Daughtry III passed away in Roberta, Georgia on April 2. Born April 3, 1935, he was the son of the late Harry and Glen Daughtry of Martinsville. Harry grew up in Bassett and graduated in 1957 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
His love of sports found him as a manager of the VPI football team during his college years. Harry was also a member of the Corps of Cadets. After graduation, Harry join the United States Air Force and served on active duty for several years before transitioning to Reserve duty where he served for a combined 14 years as the rank of Captain. After his military service Harry returned to the Martinsville & Henry County area to work for Bassett Furniture Industries. Many years later Harry managed the Bassett Community Center where he was a strong supporter of the youth in Bassett and nearby communities. Harry’s passion was teaching the youth personal core values, leading them to excel in sports and learn lifelong leadership and sportsmanship skills.
Harry was a member of First Baptist Church in Martinsville during his high school years, earning his Eagle Scout award with the Boy Scout.
He was married to the late Lynn Alvis Daughtry, and was also predeceased by his daughter Lisa Daughtry Knott. Surviving are his daughter Jennifer Pope Daughtry and children Gabriel and Kaitlynn of Martinsville, his son Christopher Lee Daughtry and fiancée Brenda Moorefield of Aliso Viejo, California, his sister Martha Daughtry Glass and husband Steve of Cary, North Carolina, sister-in-law Joyce Grant of Wilmington, NC, and many more nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home on Riverside Drive in Bassett on April 8, 2017 at 2 P.M. Please honor Harry by contributing to his grandchildren's Scout Troops, Boy Scout Troop 326, (Broad Street Christian Church, 106 Broad Street, Martinsville, VA 24112) and Girl Scout Troop 943 (St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, 401 Fayette Street, Martinsville, VA 24112).
