Jimmy was born May 4, 1933 in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Bartlett High School, where he was “Mr. Bartlett” his junior year and then left to attend Christian Brothers High School on a football Scholarship where he graduated in 1952. Jimmy was a Golden Glove Boxer for several years in Memphis. When called upon to do so, he served in the Army during the Korean War. Following his service in the Army, Jimmy returned to Memphis where he married Nancie Henry in 1958. Jimmy joined the Memphis Police Department in November of 1959 where he worked for 37 years until his retirement as Major in October of 1996. Not content with being a homebody, he went to work as Head of Security for Libertyland and the Mid-South Fair until his full retirement.
Jimmy was an avid Golfer and all around sports enthusiast. He was a softball coach for his wife and oldest daughter when they played for the Memphis Police Wives' team, and was always the head cheerleader for any activities his daughters were involved in.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancie, his 3 daughters Debbie Anderson (Neil Anderson), Cindy Warren (Benny Warren), and Leslie Northam (Damon Northam), his 6 grandchildren, Niki Hanba (Jonathan Hanba), Jonathan Carter, Carter Anderson, Mathew Warren (Kalyn Warren), Nicholas Warren, Chandler Northam, and his 5 great grandchildren Alex, Ethan, Zoey, Jonesy, Delaney and his pet cat Rufus.
The Memorial Service will be held on Monday, December 4th at 2pm at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens located at 3700 Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN. The viewing/visitation will be held from noon to the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made on behalf of Mr. Carter to the Special Olympics of Tennessee.
