Donald Eugene Cook, 93, of Memphis, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2021. Donald was born in Memphis, Tennessee on October 19, 1927 to Everett Whitman and Evelyn Turhune Cook, and was a graduate of Messick High School. He was united in marriage to Laura Belle Lowry Cook, also of Memphis, on July 10, 1948. Donald was the dedicated co-owner of Everett W Cook & Sons, Commercial Masonry Contractors and was an active member of the Mason Contractors Association of America. He was a member of First Evangelical Church where he and Laura worshipped alongside dear friends. Don was a longtime member of Colonial Country Club where he was an avid golfer and volunteer for state, national, and professional golf tournaments and where he developed a love for playing Bridge. He was a lifelong supporter of Memphis State University athletics as a season ticket holder for both basketball & football and was a proud member of the Rebounders Club. More recently, Don and Laura were much loved residents of the Kirby Pines Retirement Community. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Laura, on November 9, 2020. He is survived by one son, Michael Whitman Cook (Jennifer) of Memphis and Oxford, England, and one daughter Karen Leigh Cook of Germantown,Tennessee. He was the well-loved grandfather, affectionally known as “Pop”, to four grandchildren: Joshua M Cook (Nalee) of Nashville, Phillip W Cook (Renee) of Memphis, Minor Cook Pipes of Memphis and Michael Whitman Cook, Jr of Radley College, Adbingdon, England. In addition, he was great-grandfather to Lucas Cook, Elena Cook, and Lydia Cook of Memphis and Ailani Cook of Nashville.
Visitation for Donald will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers the family have requested that memorials be made to Hope for Memphis Fund at the Christian Community Foundation or charity of choice.
