Elsie Pauline Duran, 74, of Barstow passed away in the early morning of Sunday, September 23, 2018. She was a long-time resident of Barstow. She was born, Elsie Pauline Gurule, on December 2, 1943 in Tome-Adelino, New Mexico to Joe and Lola Gurule. Although she was born in New Mexico, Elsie moved to California at a young age where she remained for the rest of her life. She was proud to be a Barstow High School Riffian and graduated in 1962. The following year she would meet, fall in love and eventually marry the man of her dreams, Richard Duran. On August 10, 1963, Richard and Elsie were married at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and remained married for 50 years until Richard passed in 2014. In 1967, they welcomed their first daughter, Valerie. Nine years later, in 1976 they would complete their family with their second daughter, Rachel. Elsie worked a few jobs before getting hired at the Marine Corps Logistics Base where she dedicated 20+ years before retiring in 2007 to care for Richard. She was a loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, soon to be great-grandmother and friend to all that knew her. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Veneranda; her father, Joe; her mother, Lola; her sister, Ocariz; and her husband, Richard. She will be missed by all her family including her daughters, Valerie of Menifee, Rachel and her husband, Isaac, of Barstow; her granddaughters, Evangeline and her husband, Gavin, of Hutto, Texas, Crystal and her husband, Steven, of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Idalia of Barstow; her only grandson, James of Barstow; her brother, Manuel of Barstow; her brother in laws, Jeffrey of Barstow, and Sam of Barstow; as well as her sister in laws, brother in laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and all her friends.
There will be no public visitation.
The rosary will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 10 a.m.
The mass will immediately follow.
Burial will be at Mt. View Memorial Park following the mass.
A reception to celebrate Elsie's life will take place at the Knights of Columbus hall.
