It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Robert & Eileen Domke of Drayton Valley, formerly of Barrhead. They are survived by their daughters; Yvonne (Peter) & Charlene (Wayne); grandchildren; Cordelle (Jesse), Jeff (Cherice), Sarah, Taylor; cherished great grandchildren; Ava, Rhet. Eileen’s siblings: Leona, Mae (Ewald), Elvie, Charles (Carol), Jeanette (Fritz). Robert’s siblings: Susan (Fred), Ann (Reinhard), Alice, Art and numerous extended family members.
They were predeceased by their parents; William & Jennie Sutherland, Emil & Helena Domke, Eileen’s brother; Lorne, sister; Marion; Robert’s brothers; Hugo, Reinhold & Friedrich.
Born and Raised in the Barrhead areas of Mosside, Summerdale & Mystery Lake, Eileen and Robert met and married in 1954 and moved for a short time to Prince George where Robert worked at a sawmill. They settled for the next 68 years in Drayton Valley, where they raised their daughters; owned and operated Valley Concrete & Hillside Gravel, eventually moving to the farm where they lived till their passing.
Eileen’s Priority was her family, she was an excellent cook and loved her garden, providing fresh wholesome food for her family was important. Her family has fond memories of her pies, preserves, cinnamon buns, bread and stews were all standout favorites, she also enjoyed sewing, handicrafts and reading.
While Robert was a successful businessman his real passion was for his Arabian horses, Percheron draft teams, Hereford and Angus cattle, and all the joys and hard work that come with farming. Robert loved anything to do with his horses – giving sleigh rides, horse shows, pulls and parades. He restored a model A car and several tractors entering shows & pulls. He was an elder & member of DV United Church, Agricultural Society and Horse Club. He was a fussy, but talented carpenter, he rebuilt many sleighs, buggies and wagon wheels by hand and gifted his daughters with handcrafted full length mirrors. Anyone who knew Robert, knew his love of a good joke or story.
2024 was a year of special celebrations; beginning with the birth of their first great grandson, Rhet in January; their 70th wedding anniversary in May; Robert’s 95th Birthday in June, followed by Eileen’s 90th Birthday in September.
As per their wishes a private family service will be held, Donations, if desired may be made to the Barrhead Public Library or St. Michael Lutheran Church, Mystery Lake, Ab.
