Ruth M Miller

Ruth Mary (McIntyre) Miller was born on October 6, 1933. Her father was John J.

Mcintyre who, at the time she was born, was a lawyer in Douglas, Wyoming, and eventually became a justice of the Wyoming Supreme Court. Ruth's mother was Beula Ruth (Nixon) Mcintyre; she was thirty years old when Ruth was born and the mother of two older boys (Joe and Don) but died during childbirth with Ruth. Ruth's father remarried and they had two more sons (Dee and John). Because her father was very involved in politics, Ruth's grandparents, Frank and Orabelle McIntyre, raised Ruth until she was a young adult.

Ruth married Norris Miller on June 7, 1953 after two years of courtship and they were blessed with 69-years of marriage. Immediately after getting married, Norris was commissioned as an officer and assigned to a Field Artillery Battalion near Frankfurt, Germany, where their son Michael was born on January 16, 1955. They returned to the USA in April 1955 to Fort Collins to wait for Norris' first teaching assignment and then moved to Saratoga, Wyoming. It was there they were blessed with their twin daughters Collene and Ilene on October 16, 1956.

In 1958, the family moved to Fort Lupton, Colorado. Ruth started a pre-school in the basement of their house for about 20 children. She taught colors, numbers and about loving God. After Norris completed a Master's degree, he accepted a job with the Kern High School District in Lake Isabella, California, where he taught for two years while Ruth cared for their children and helped in their early education.

In 1963, the family moved to Bakersfield, California, where Norris was offered a job as the instrumental music director at Foothill High School where he worked until retirement in 1991. Ruth became an elementary school secretary for four years.

The family was very active in the Wesley United Methodist Church and, in 1968, Ruth became the chairperson for a Lay Witness Mission. The visiting director recognized her passion and commitment and asked Ruth to be a Team Member at other churches. This ministry brought Norris to a deep love for Christ, and they shared Jesus together through Lay Renewal Ministries for the next 45 years.

Through Ruth's prayers and encouragement, Norris and their children came to know the joy of becoming fully committed Christians.

Ruth also got involved with women's Aglow Fellowship and in 1976 became the President of the local Women's Aglow Chapter. A few years later she became the President of the Southern San Joaquin Area and eventually was appointed as the state Aglow Prayer Chairperson. She desired to connect the entire state: Northern, Central and Southern California with prayer.

About this time, Ruth and Norris helped start The Chapel of Grace, the church they have continued to attend.

Ruth was involved in a teaching ministry for over fifty years and was invited to speak at many meetings and conferences. She also helped to start SWIM (Supporting Women In Ministry), a non-profit organization that encourages women to enter into full-time ministry. Thousands of women had their lives enriched by her positive messages and exhortations to find their ministry and use the gifts they have been given by God.

Her traveling was limited after 2012 due to health issues, but she continued to minister to the Kern County area. Though she was in a great deal of pain during the last ten years, her joy for the Lord and sharing His love never left her.

She is survived by her husband Norris Miller, son Michael Allen Miller, (wife Catharine), daughter Collene Yvette Travers, daughter Ilene Rene' Peevyhouse (husband Jack Michael), 8 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren.

She loved the Lord and she loved her family. She wanted others to become part of God's family and was passionate in teaching others to love and share the love of her Lord and Savior.

A Celebration of Life for Ruth will be held Friday, December 16, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, Bakersfield, CA 93306, in the Chapel.

Reception will follow at Royal Coachman Estates 6401 Royal Coach Drive., Bakersfield, California 93306.
