On January 28, 1958, she married James (Jim) M. Fuller while he was a student at the University of Texas in Austin and she was a student at North Texas State in Denton. After the marriage, they made their home in Austin where their first son, James Michael, was born on January 29, 1959. However, due to his premature birth, he died the following month. In 1961 Jim's job offer took them to Bakersfield where their second son, Michael Wayne was born February 26, 1962. Mary started working for San Joaquin Hospital soon after arriving in Bakersfield. In 1968, she started working for her husband when he started his own company, Fuller Oil Co. that November 9 they welcomed their third son Derek James. Mary also worked in real estate before working for The Bakersfield Californian where she worked from 1996 until retirement in 2013.
Mary was a very proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Corresponding Secretary for 5 years. Mary was also a member of The United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mary was a volunteer for Bakersfield Memorial Hospital and the Bakersfield SPCA. Mary enjoyed knitting where she enjoyed meeting with her group of friends at Panera Bread.
Mary passed away peacefully on June 9, 2023. Survivors include her son, Derek J. Fuller; grandchildren, Laura M. Fuller Parra and Patrick J. Fuller; and great grandchildren, Steven and Alanee Parra. She was predeceased by her parents; adopted mother, Olene Franklin, husband James M. Fuller, sons James Michael Fuller, Michael Wayne Fuller and sister-in-law Hazel Cook.
A visitation and services will be held Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 8:00 to 9:50 A.M. at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd, Bakersfield, CA 93306. Funeral services will occur 10:00 to 11:00 A.M with a graveside service immediately following. We would like to thank Hoffmann Hospice Home for their loving care.
