Dorothy Jean Hill passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 29th, 2017 and now lives forevermore in the arms of her loving Savior Jesus. Dorothy was born on October 14th, 1927 in Black Oak, Arkansas to parents Wendell and Lois Hall. In 1943, The Hall Family moved to Richmond, CA where they supported the war effort. Dorothy went to work in the office of the Kaiser Shipyards where she met Bill Hill. Then in 1944, Dorothy and Bill eloped to Reno, NV on October 31st. Dorothy and Bill made their home in the Bay Area where sons, Ron and David joined the family. In 1953, Dorothy and Bill moved to Bakersfield, and later daughter Denise was born. Dorothy worked various jobs while in Bakersfield including Sparkle Cleaners and as a butcherette at Young's Marketplace and Green Frog Market. As the years progressed, Dorothy was able to stay home and continue to care for her daughter and assist with grandchildren who entered her life at a young age. She took much pride and joy in her grandchildren and always had sweet treats from the local bakery for them. Dorothy was able to realize a dream in 1982, as she and her daughter opened The Fabric Shop. This store provided a place where quality fabrics and an environment to inspire local seamstresses were emphasized.
Dorothy and Bill were longtime members of Stine Road Baptist and Valley Baptist Churches. For years Dorothy attended weekly Bible studies. During their retirement years Dorothy and Bill traveled with church friends. Two of her favorite trips were to Europe and Israel. On weekends they would spend time at their home in Pismo Beach taking grandchildren along.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 71.5 years Bill, and her brother Travis. She is survived by her sister Peggy Donahue, children Ron Hill (Charlotte), David Hill, and Denise Keiffer (Ken). Grandchildren: Craig Hill (Jennifer), Annette Hill, Ben Hill (Jamie), Adam Hill, Allison Hill, Ryan Wigley, Kyle Wigley (Shelly), and Kaylea Hayslett (Garrett). Nine great-grandchildren: Trevor, Joshua, Tyler, Nathan, Lexi, Tyson, Ben Jr., Houston, and Paxton and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
