Graveside services will be held Friday, January 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Mortuary Chapel for Doris Schallock, who passed peacefully on December 28, 2010. Viewing will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2011 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Doris was born in Richmond, Virginia to Leslie W. Hope and Sarah E. Hope, on June 22, 1919, her mother’s birthday. She was raised and schooled in Glendale, California. After high school, Doris worked in many service-related industries, including health care and animal care. She met and married her first husband, George M. Bly in 1940. Doris had 3 children, one of whom, a son, Morgan “Buddy” Bly, preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death was her brother Ernest W. Hope. She raised her 2 daughters, Virginia and Georgia, in San Fernando Valley, California. Doris’ abiding love of animals, especially horses and dogs, as well as art, gardening, and outdoor activities continued throughout her long and active life.
After the loss of her first husband, Doris relocated to Bakersfield and opened a health supply and herbal remedy store. She became active in many clubs, dance groups and volunteer activities. Here she met Roger W. Schallock, who shared her love of dance and travel. They married in 1983.
Doris held many leadership positions in clubs such as Laf-a-Lot Dance Club, Los Allegres Dinner-Dance Club, Pairs & Spares, Fairfax Grange #570 and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lake Isabella.
Doris shared her love of humor with friends and family, always ready with a clever quip or colloquialism. Her artistic abilities led to a lifetime of sharing her crafts, painting, sculpture, quilting and sewing. She raised her daughters and nieces to share a love of horses by guiding them in participation in equestrian activities and competitions such as horse shows, jumping, gymkhana and barrel racing.
In 2000, Doris moved to Fallbrook, California, living out her final years near her youngest daughter and continuing her involvement in gardening, art and animal care.
Doris will be missed by daughter Virginia Gay Hood and her family: son-in-law Adolph Hood, granddaughters Tina Lowder, Terri Norris and Michelle Hernandez and their spouses, nine great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; daughter Georgia Sue Peterman and her family: granddaughters Stacy Mendenhall, Paige Johnson, and Rebekah Peterman, and two great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Victoria Schallock her family: grandchildren Pattie Huestis, Pam Riggio, their spouses, and five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Peggy Hope and her family, and many other treasured family, friends, and Doris’ two dogs, Ruggy and Peppy.
In lieu of flowers, Doris’ family requests donations be made in Doris’ name to her favorite charities, Bakersfield SPCA and the American Cancer Society.
