Darvin was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania on January 2, 1926, to Albert Obum Shultz and Mary Kathryn Boyles Shultz. The Shultz family left Altoona and traveled across the country to California in 1928 as Darvins father took a job with the Santa Fe Railroad. The Shultz family settled in Bakersfield.
With the outbreak of WWII, Darvin enlisted in the US Navy in November 1943. After intensive radio military training, Darvin enlisted in the US Navy in November 1943. After intensive radio military training, Darvin was assigned to a three-man team to fly the Grumman TBF Avenger (WWII Torpedo Bomber) off the waters and islands of the Pacific Ocean. After numerous missions and upon the end of the war, Darvin was honorably discharged in June 1946.
Upon returning home, Darvin met and married Wanda Carpenter in 1947 and they had five children together. After 29 years of marriage, the couple divorced and Darvin thereafter married Marilyn Bush in 1980 (deceased in 2004.)
Following his military service, Darvin began working with the Cummins Service and Sales Company where he remained employed for some 41 years. He started out as a Delivery Man, and then served in several capacities including parts Salesclerk and Parts Department Manager before being promoted to Branch Manager, a position he occupied for 14 years.
Darvin devoted himself to the Salvation Army for 30 years where he served as an Army Sergeant Major and a Leader of the Corp Cadets. Being thoroughly immersed in Salvation Army service, Darvin was a Sunday School Teacher, a Youth Group Leader, and a band member.
Darvin lived his life giving to others, helping all who needed and wanted for something always opening his heart to strangers. He approached life with an open and loving heart, always putting others ahead of himself. And, he was a devoted family man, remaining loyal to his children, grandchildren, and friends to whom he would extoll the virtues of a strong work ethic. He would often say to his children: "Work hard and stay put."
Darvin is survived by daughter Kathie and her husband Mark Magellan, son Dennis and wife Brenda Shultz, daughter Jennifer and husband Michael Elkin, foster daughter Donna and her husband David Sommers, stepson Bill and wife Sharon Bush, stepdaughter Helen and her husband Doug Topp, stepdaughter Carolyn and her husband Adrian Palmer and stepdaughter Trisha and her husband Gene Meyer.
