I was 7 years old when Robert was born and lived at 585 Empire Ave. In those days he was the one you didn't mess with when he got up from a nap, while Tommy was the one you let sleep till he got up on his own.  John was very smart and always correcting Kevin's grammar while Steven always had a cute girl on his arm. Herbie and Ann were strangers and  Susan was the typical little sister. 
I remember the wooden fort we built out back and the time we spent digging a hole at the spook house, intending to bury the fort as a hide away! LOL. 
Lots of great memories with the Olsen's, playing Kick the Can or Army using baseball bats, Marco-Polo in the pool, Kevin and I wearing oversized leather jackets up to the stores like we were Greasers.  Oh, and cousin Robert Bayonne, across the street, with the mini-motorbike. 
 My wife also comes from a big family with just her Mom raising them, and just the other day I was reminiscing and recounting all your names as best I could, picturing my 10 year old self looking down at a 3 year old Robert in his diaper being just a rowdy as we all were.  LOL.
I was once again reading Steven's story about 9/11 and came across Robert's passing. I'm truly moved. What a hero he is and another proud member of this wonderful family.

Dear Aunt Natalie, Paige, Owen, and Ryan, You have been and will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Our hearts are broken over the loss of Uncle Robby, but we feel some peace knowing he’s no longer suffering and able to peacefully walk and talk again in heaven. We know he’s watching over all of us. Dearest Natalie, Paige, Owen and Ryan, and the whole Olsen Family,

I never had the pleasure of meeting Rob. Natalie and the children always spoke lovingly of him. And Miss Gloria as well. She adored herSon-in-law.

As a young child I was taught by my Irish Grandfather : "The measure of a man is not in his wealth or possessions. Rather, it is how he presents day to day, through his work, and with his family. " 
With his wife Natalie, they have raised 3 wonderful, truly bright children, now young adults. And just amazing people they are !

I wish to honor both his commitment and love of his family , and also to the FDNY. I believe for someone to be in the Fire Department, is truly a calling. To Rob and Tower Ladder 146, I am so grateful to your valor and courage each day. The Thunderbolts keep Brooklyn safe! Thank you. And sincerely, especially on 9/11 and and the following aftermath. I wish you God's blessings, and to keep you safe always. 

Please, I wish you to find comfort and yes joy, in the thought Rob has been called to be a Guardian Angel to all of you, family , co-workers, and all of his friends.

Such a good man. Rob and I shared a few bad days together on the job. He was a pillar of strength. Quiet and unassuming and a phenomenal firefighter. He typified the words of Ray Pfeifer, "Do the right thing, even when nobody's looking."
