Narrie Carter

Narrie Carter born July 25, 1924 in Durham North Carolina. Daughter of Ollie Simms Williams and Magnolia Cook Williams. Spouse: Riley Carter Jr. (deceased). Narrie attended up to Junior High School but dropped out to help her family during the Great Depression. She met her husband Riley at a local dance, fell in love and married in 1941 in Georgetown Washington DC.

Narrie and Riley raised a family of 6 children. Their first set of three (Carolyn, Riley III and Ruth) were born and raised in North Carolina. She was deeply grounded in her faith and raised her older children at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, in Durham, NC where she sang in the choir.

In the early 1950's Narrie and Riley migrated North to seek better employment opportunities. They found employment at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, where she worked as a General Practical Nurse for over 20 years.

Riley III and Ruth later joined their parents where they attended Bay Shore High School where Narrie was President of the PTA.

During her tenure at Pilgrim, she took pride and dedication in taking care of the patients. Narrie recalls reading her first paycheck in New York which said: "New York, the Big Apple, if you make it here, you can make it anywhere. With determination and God as the foundation, Narrie absolutely knew the goals for her family would be accomplished. Her biggest dream was to buy land and build a home, which was done in the early 60's. in Babylon Village where she and Riley Jr. raised their younger children (Debra, Karen and David). Narrie loved to crochet and make beautiful blankets for her family. Narrie was an active member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church where she baptized and raised her three younger children. She taught Sunday School and was part of the Altar Guild. Her love, passion and joy in life was being a Mother. She was a strong advocate for other children and was a motherly figure to many, sharing her wisdom, strength, determination, faith, compassion and love.

Narrie loved her assortment of pets. Whether it was a hen, rabbit, cats and especially dogs, namely Milo, Pepper, Rembrandt, Rex and Pee Wee, whom always gave her joy.

Narrie is survived by her

6 children, Carolyn, Riley III, Ruth, Debra, Karen and David She has 10 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren, and 8 Great Great Grandchildren.

Narrie was the Rock, Pulse and Heartbeat of her family and will be deeply missed.
