Rubin was born on June 1, 1940 in Elgin, Texas – the 10th and youngest child born to Armon and Pauline (Ross) Wilson. He grew up in Littig, Texas until elementary school, when his family moved to Austin. Hard work was instilled early in Willie and was required as part of a sharecropper family. He believed in family and enjoyed learning as much as he could about ancestral history through family tree research. He graduated from L.C. Anderson High School during the segregated days of Austin.
Rubin loved to travel and pursued that love by becoming one of the first five Black interstate bus drivers, with Kerrville Bus Company (bought by COACH). He drove motorcoaches on the Austin-Houston or Austin-Victoria bus routes as well as charters for the Longhorns, Dallas Cowboys or movie productions. Earlier in his career, he worked for the City of Austin bus line and was the third Black driver. His route passed HBCU Huston Tillotson, where he met his future wife.
Rubin believed in the golden rules for men: never raise a hand to a woman, tell your kids they can always come home, tell your family you love them, polish your shoes, date your wife, and life is easier if the small things are done with a blessed attitude.
Rubin was a car guy, spending many happy years attending car shows of vintage and new models. He enjoyed spending time with and holding virtual calls, using closed-caption software, to speak with his only grandchild. He was kind, humorous and humble.
Rubin will be greatly missed by his wife of 52 years, Jo Ann (Scott) and his daughter Robin Wilson and granddaughter, Lorraine “Rainey” who live in New Jersey; and his only surviving brother, Corinthus Wilson; along with a host of extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Russel Alan Wilson, US Army.
Graveside service and burial will be held at the family plot at 11:00am on Saturday, November 20, 2021 located at Cook-Walden/ Capital Parks Cemetery, 14501 IH-35 North, Pflugerville, TX. The family thanks you for your prayers and other expressions of sympathy during this difficult time.
