William Mark Day, Jr. ("Bill"), of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on October 23, 2022. Bill was born in his grandmother's home in Sulphur Springs, Texas on July 24, 1932. He was raised in Gladewater, Texas, where he attended Gladewater, High School. Upon high school graduation, he moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. In 1954, through a mutual friend, 21-year-old Bill was introduced to 17-year-old Judy Cox. In three months, they were married and spent the next 68 years sharing a full life. Two years after their marriage, Bill graduated from the University of Texas Law School. Three years later, their daughter, Lisa, was born. After practicing law for a short time, Bill decided to pursue a business career that included residential and commercial development, banking, and oil and gas investments. Although he was successful in business, his most fulfilling career were the years working as a mediator for the Texas Education Agency, settling disputes between the parents of special needs children and the school district. Bill was a peacemaker at heart, and the joy he felt reaching a compromise between two parties turned out to be the most gratifying work of his life.
Bill's friends and family will remember him for his steadfast faith, his love of nature, and his friendliness and charm. He was the life of the party and the master of ceremonies. He had a genuine interest in people, and he was gifted in expressing his sincere appreciation for life and the people he loved. Bill took nothing for granted, and he was grateful for his health and his friends and family. He was always willing to give his sage advice to those who asked.
Bill is proceeded in death by his father, William Mark Day, and mother Maurine Day Crawford.
Bill is survived by his wife, Judy; his daughter, Lisa Day Murphy; his son-in-law, John; his grandson, Jake Murphy; sister-in-law, Gail Means Cox; niece Shawn Cox Walton (husband Jim); grandnephew Derek Walton; grandniece, Faith Walton; niece, Dawn Cox Capra (husband Glen); grandnephew, Anthony Capra; and grandnieces Audrey and Anamarie Capra.
A visitation and reception for Bill will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2022, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas 78752. A private family graveside service will be held the following day at Austin Memorial Park.
