Vera Martin was born July 31, 1923, in Austin, the last of six children born to Ophal Young Dunlap and Arthur Hoyt Dunlap. She died July 28, 2015 in Austin, Texas. A memorial service will be held Monday, August 3, 2015, 11AM, at University Avenue Church of Christ, 1903 University Ave, Austin, TX, 78705, with Pastor Eddie Sharp officiating. Vera was a proud member of University Avenue Church of Christ for over forty years, and was baptized there in 1935 by R.B. Sweet. Vera was a member of the Hyde Park Reading Club since 1973. She and her husband were active in square dancing for several years in Austin.
Vera was predeceased by her parents, siblings and husband. She is survived by nephews Jan Dunlap and Philip Dunlap of Austin, John Oates of Abilene, Charlie Oates of Pecos, and Jay Oates Jr. of Balmorrhea, nieces Cheryl Dunlap Patton of Aurora, CO, Susan Leona Del Rios of Boulder, CO, Dollie Dunlap Harris of Austin, brother-in-law Nat Martin of Charlottesville, VA, and sister-in-law Elizabeth Martin Brady of Humble, TX.
Vera attended school in Austin, graduating from Austin High School in 1940. She attended George Pepperdine University in California from 1940-1941, transferring to the University of Texas at Austin, where she received a B.S. degree in Foods and Nutrition in 1944.
Following college, Vera worked until 1948 as ward dietician at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. She completed a hospital dietary internship at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, TN, from 1948-1949, where she met and later married her husband, James T. Martin, of Wichita Falls, TX, September 2, 1950. She continued working as a Nutritionist at Vanderbilt University Hospital for 12 years following her internship. The couple lived and worked in several cities throughout the southwest before retiring to Austin in 1973. Vera and James remained married for 51 years, until his death in 2001.
