She was preceded in death by her lifelong companion, Patti Cox, parents Elizabeth Ann Penry Alexander and David Burl Alexander, and grandparents Annye Clinton Ferrel Penry and Clyde A. Penry, Bertha Donnell Alexander and D.H. Alexander. She was survived by dear friends Mitchell Gibbs and Sonjah Pointer.
She was born on November 16, 1938, in Waco, Texas, grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from Texas Christian University where she obtained a B.A. in 1960 and an M.A. in 1963. Then, she began a more than a 35-year career with the Texas Employment Commission, working in the Houston and Fort Worth regions and the State Office in Austin, Texas. She retired serving as the Employment Service Director. Throughout her career, she was a member of the professional organization, International Association of Personnel in Employment Security, having served as Texas Chapter President and as several international committee chairs.
After retirement, Sunny began volunteering at the Austin Habitat for Humanity as land acquisition coordinator and later served on the AHFH board of directors. She was recognized as a volunteer exhibiting the heart and mission of AHFH and for the exceptional board leadership and service beyond the call of duty. For several years she volunteered at Seton Medical Center Austin, continuing the work of Patti Cox with the Guardian Angels committee that provided knitted afghans for neonatal babies. More recently, she volunteered at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless/ Front Steps Austin. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Austin, Texas.
At her request, a memorial service will not be held. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery, Fort Worth, Texas will be private and at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.
