Stanley J Peterman, a long-time resident of Austin, passed away April 9, 2011 at age 84. Stanley was born in Fredericksburg, Texas, August 30, 1926. He moved to Austin when he was 10 and lived here for all but two years of the rest of his life.
Stanley is survived by Jennie, his wife of 60 years; daughter Donna; sons Chris (wife JoEllen), David (wife Angela), Anthony (wife Kristie), and Brian (wife Adele); grandchildren Larry, Lisa, Ashley, Jeffrey, Andrew, Jack, William, Claire, Brooke, Emma, and Matthew; and great grandchildren Sierra and Rowan. Stanley had four siblings, being survived by brothers Bill and Herbert (wife Billie) and sister Bernice (husband Micky Caldwell), but Bernice followed him in death passing away on April 19th. Stanley is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by father William, mother Louise Brandt Peterman, and sister Louise Oliver.
Stanley was a family man who treasured spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a gentle, quiet leader, who treated everyone with respect and never compromised his principles.
Stanley attended Austin Public Schools from when he was 10 until he graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1943, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. After working a few years, he attended the University of Texas at Austin. In 1949, Stanley was in the upper three percent of his class at UT and was invited to become a member of and was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Fraternity. He became a member of the Beta Alpha Psi Fraternity in 1950. Stanley received his BBA Degree from UT Austin in 1951.
During his teen years, Stanley was active in the Youth Fellowship of Grace Methodist Church. In 1947 he was chosen to represent Grace Methodist Church at a national MYF conference. He proudly attended that end-of-year conference which was held in Cleveland, Ohio.
As a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Stanley taught Sunday School Classes for 40 years. He helped when needed and held many offices – Treasurer, Chairman Board of Trustees, and Endowment Committee.
Stanley was also active professionally, becoming a member of the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants in 1953, Member of American Institute of Accountants in 1954, President Austin Chapter Certified Public Accountants 1964 – 1965, and President National Association of Accountants, Austin Chapter 1972 – 1973.
His community service included the offices of Director and President of South Austin Lions Club 1962 – 1964, Director of Junior Chamber of Commerce, Life Member Texas Association of School Business Officials, Life member Austin Retired Teacher Association, and Member of Board Travis County Appraisal District 1982 – 1987.
Stanley’s career started in July 1951 with the CPA firm of Haskins and Sells Dallas Office. In August 1952, he and his wife moved back to Austin and he joined the CPA firm of Albert Caster. After a few years he became Partner with Albert Caster & Co. The national CPA firm, Peat, Marwick, Mitchell, acquired that CPA practice in the early 70’s and Stanley maintained a position of principal in PMM for a number of years. Stanley later accepted the job of Director of Finance with the Austin Independent School District where he worked until he retired in November 1989.
Stanley grew up hiking, swimming, fishing and playing tennis. He learned to play golf later in life, playing on Saturday with his children during his working years. After retiring, Stanley’s regular golf game was on Tuesday mornings.
Stanley liked to travel. He and his wife Jennie took many memorable trips during their 60 years of marriage, including trips to Niagara Falls, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, the Rocky Mountains, Mount Rainier, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Bryce Canyon, Zion and the Grand Canyon. For his 75th birthday, their children took them to California and played golf with him at Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay.
The Family would like to thank all of the Doctors, Nurses, and Caregivers that helped Stanley in his last months. Our thanks to all friends and family for the love and prayers that went to Stanley.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 205 East Monroe Street in Austin, Texas. Pastor Linda Kessie will officiate.
