Dr. Sergio Escobar

Sergio Escobar, age 67, of Austin, Texas, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023, at 12:27AM, at Ascension Seton Hospital, Intensive Care Unit, where he fought an extraordinarily courageous and valiant 27-day battle after a wholly unexpected heart attack and a series of cardiac arrests.

Sergio was born on August 30, 1955, in Medellín, Colombia, as the first of five children of Alberto and Fabiola Escobar. His family moved from Colombia to the United States in 1965, where they took up residence in Highland Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1974, Sergio moved to Boulder, Colorado, to go to college at the University of Colorado. There, he got his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1979 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS degree) in 1984. He practiced dentistry in private practice in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1984 to 1991.

Sergio moved to Austin in 1991, where he began practicing dentistry in offices located in Austin and Lakeway. In 1995, with his business partner Dr. Rollin Sarradet, he founded Rose Dental Group, a premier, state-of-the-art, multi-office dental practice in the Austin area. As a talented and accomplished dentist, he had unparalleled, warmhearted chairside manner. He was fondly called Dr. E, and his patients, staff and co-workers loved him. For more than 25 years at Rose Dental Group, Sergio helped build a prevailing dental group practice, where he reveled in community involvement and forged lasting professional and personal friendships. Most recently, he enjoyed practicing dentistry part-time at Bridgeview Dental in Austin. Sergio served on the board of the Capital Area Dental Foundation.

Sergio never met a stranger, not in business or leisure. He loved life and all people who crossed his path. Since his college days, Sergio played soccer as a forward, specifically a striker. He continued to play soccer even at age 67, and happily managed two teams in the Austin Men’s Soccer Association. He delighted in restoring classic cars, namely his sky blue 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, and his prized possession, the award-winning, dark ivy green metallic 1970 Ford Mustang Sportsroof. He took pride in the pristine, excellent condition in which he kept his coveted vintage cars. For the past several years, Sergio served as president of the Mustang Owners Club of Austin (MOCA). As he stated in a president’s message to that group during the pandemic: “Take this time to enjoy family, and work on your car, repair, restore, clean and shine.” That’s certainly what he did. Most recently, Sergio took up restoring and repairing clocks for classic Mustangs, a hobby he thoroughly enjoyed and at which he was quite adept.

Nothing was more important to him than his family – most especially his wife and four children and two grandchildren, about whom he beamed with adoration. His compassion, charisma, charm, strength, and pure love of life and family were his very essence. His family didn’t have him for as long as they had assumed or hoped. His illness and departure remain a complete shock to all. But his wife and children are grateful they had those 27 days in the ICU to gently shower him with tenderness and love, even from outside his sacred room.

Sergio was predeceased by his father, Alberto Escobar, and his dear brother, Jaime Escobar, who both greet him in Heaven with open arms. He is survived by Eva Ramos, his devoted wife of 29 years, and by his children, daughter Erika Siebeneicher (and husband Travis), daughter Rachel Escobar, son Ricardo Escobar, and daughter Julia Escobar, and by his two grandchildren, Barret and Audrey Siebeneicher. He is also survived by his beloved mother, Fabiola Escobar, sister Lucy Escobar/Miller, sister Betty Hurmis (and husband Anthony) and sister Victoria Escobar Jackson. He is also survived by his tias in Colombia, Rosita Veléz and Ester Trujillo, his tio Javier Escobar, and tia Nohemy Silva, and his numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Sergio will be honored by his family and friends at his Celebration of Life on Saturday, February 25, 2023, 3:00PM, at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas 78731.
