Roy grew up on a farm outside of Brownwood. He loved life on the farm as a young boy, being mischievous with his brothers and always teasing his little sisters. Roy graduated from Brownwood High School in 1950. He excelled at boxing, known for his left hook, and was a Golden Gloves champion. After high school, Roy enlisted in the US Air Force, dutifully serving his country during the Korean War. Upon returning from the war, Roy enrolled at The University of Texas, graduating in 1958. Roy was a proud member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
Roy had a long and successful career with Southwestern Bell, primarily based in Houston. While in Houston, Roy was also actively involved in numerous civic organizations, including the Houston Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Council. In the later stages of his career with Southwestern Bell, Roy served as a state lobbyist based in Austin, where he resided for the remainder of his life. After retiring from Southwestern Bell in 1996, Roy served as President of AquaSource before fully retiring in 2002.
For over 50 years, Roy was an avid golfer. He loved his time on the golf course with his buddies, both at Lakeside in Houston and at Barton Creek in Austin. Roy was infamous for his fast play on the course. Among countless fond memories and moments, his proudest were his two amazing hole-in-ones and his two incredible double-eagles. While a golf club always seemed to be firmly in his left hand, a fishing pole was firmly in his right. His favorite place on earth was his second home for over 40 years on Carancahua Bay. Over the many years, he enjoyed countless hours fishing alongside friends and family, teaching his children and grandchildren the finer points of catching flounders, speckled trout and reds.
His passion for golfing and fishing were equally matched by his love for all things UT sports. While living in Austin during the past 30 years, Roy hardly ever missed a UT football, basketball or baseball game, always proudly wearing his burnt orange.
Above all, Roy cherished and deeply loved his family and many friends. He will be missed dearly.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Charles, Jeannine and his beloved brother Gerald. He is survived by brother Jack Moore, and sisters Evaline Brown, Catherine Guthrie and Carolyn Foster. Roy is also survived by his soulmate, his wife Julie; his four children: Melinda Wooten, Michael Moore, Patricia Brown, and Megan Moore; as well as his seven beautiful grandchildren.
