Rose was born in Rockingham, NC on Easter Sunday, April 4th, 1926, to the late James and Willie Ellerbe. In her childhood she faced the great depression and at age 15, Pearl Harbor day. Rose received a Bachelor of Music degree from Greensboro College in May of 1948. After receiving her under graduate degree, she moved to New York City to study voice at Columbia University where she sang recitals at several venues including with the chorus at the Metropolitan Opera. While in New York, Rose met her husband of 53 years, Gene Roy Powers, PhD. Together, they lived in several locations throughout the US, including 13 years in Storrs, Connecticut before settling in Austin, Texas in 1974.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Carolyn Thomas. She is survived by son James Powers and wife, Mary, of Huntsville, AL, daughter Carolyn Portugal and husband, Rick, of Austin, TX, son Bill Powers and wife, Ruth, of Austin, TX and son Chuck Powers and wife, Gwen, of Orange, TX. Rose was also blessed with twelve grandchildren and one great grandson.
Memorial Services will be held on Monday, March 11th at Bethany United Methodist Church, 10010 Anderson Mill Road, at 11:00 a.m. In
lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202.
Rose was a talented potter, a loving wife and mother, and a sweet human being. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
