Ronnie was born in Luling, Texas, on October 3, 1952. As a child he lived in Fentress and Victoria. He graduated from Gregory-Portland High School in 1970. His years in Portland were when he made friends who remained central in his life. After high school, he became a journeyman electrician known for the uncompromising quality of his work.
Ronnie's favorite things included spending time with his family and friends, laughing, fishing, golf, shooting guns, carpentry, and cooking meat. He will remembered for his generosity, reliability, and love of a good party.
He is survived by his wife Lydia Cates; his sister and brother-in-law Pamela and Lee Roy Grimes; his nephews, Joseph and Dennis, and their families; his step-daughter Emily Cates; his cousins (you know who you are); his dog pal Otto; and his best friend Dale Jones. Preceding him in death were his parents Claude Woodrow and Willie Mae (Vineyard) Smith.
A Celebration of Ronnie's life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
