Roger Wiley hired me in 1982 to teach at Lanier HS. I was previously in Colorado and never lived in Texas. I thought he was a Western Sheriff.  He told me all about the Aggies and showed me his Aggie bowling ball. It was a brick with big holes in it. He was a kind and fair man with a great sense of humor. 


Mr. Wiley was a great Principle.  Never will  forget how many times he let me make it after I did something stupid.  Always with some good advice like a man  talking to HIS child.  RIP

Mr. Wiley was a wonderful and compassionate man. I was a student at Lanier (for longer than anyone should be). He always had a smile on his face, and always a kind word of encouragement. I was a troublemaker in high school, and he saw a lost soul, not a rotten one. He was right, I found my way, because of people like Mr. Whiley and Mr. Mccarther I found my way. He was a wonderful soul and will be sorely missed by all. My thoughts go out to the family and wish them well in this time of need.

Mr. Wiley was a long-time neighbor and friend of the Hackard family, living across the street from my Dad, Clifford Hackard and stepmom Lois, from the early 1960s until Dad and Lois moved into Parsons House in 2002. Whenever Sandra and I would come to visit Dad and Lois, we would drive by our house on Greenlawn, in hopes of seeing Mr. Wiley out working in his yard, so we could stop by for a brief visit.   He was a wonderful man, and we have missed our occasional visits in the past few years.  We are blessed to have known him. I know Tim and his family will have countless memories to treasure.

I did my best teaching for the 8 years Rodger was my principal at Lanier. Good teaching doesn't happen in a vacuum. I'll miss our monthly lunches of fried chicken or enchiladas at Luby's listening to his teacher stories. At my Mother's memorial service, I introduced him to my sister, and she said, "Oh, you're the one she likes!" Well said!

Mr. Wiley is a true embodiment of what it means to be an Aggie. When I first started coming to Camp Wiley as a Sophomore in high school, I was welcomed with open arms by the Camp Wiley family. Mr. Wiley always had the best stories of what it was like during his time at Texas A&M. He set the precedent for what I think is the friendliness tailgate to ever be. I think I speak for the Camp Wiley tailgate when I say that we will miss him, but his story lives on with us.

I attended O’Henry Junior High, 1958-1961.  Coach Wiley was my football & basketball coach as well as Men’s Dean!  I will never forget the important lessons, discipline and overall influence he had on my life!  As my coach he taught me what I needed to do to become a better overall athlete which paid me many dividends in my sports career in both high school & college!  There were many of my classmates/teammates who went on to become really good athletes in both HS & college!  Thank Coach Wiley from all of us you taught & guided at a critical time in our lives! To the Family of Rodger Wiley,
Please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of Rodger. Novella and I worked together at Austin High, and I almost went to O. Henry from Porter at Rodger's invitation. Instead, Jackie McGee asked me to go to Austin High. 
It is an honor for me to have known both Novella and Rodger. It was always good for me to see Rodger at Austin Retired Teachers Association (ARTA) meetings. Austin ISD was lucky to have Rodger as a leader.

I was a student at Lanier in the early 1980’s, involved in student government and worked in the office in the summer. Mr. Wiley was a warm presence and encouraging leader for students. Sending condolences to his family and friends, but celebrating a life well-loved bed.

So sad to hear that “Uncle Rodger” (as my oldest brother, Kyle Haddox, referred to him) has passed away.  There wasn’t a story my brother told about him that he wasn’t laughing.  He left many fond memories for my brother.

Mr. Wiley & Mr. Wisey were my football coaches at O'Henry way back in 1956. He was a fine man and we all loved him. He became good friends with fellow teachers, my Aunt, Louise Jarrell and Mother, Marguerite Jarrell. I have fond memories of him, that wry smile, and his tough but encouraging words to me. RIP, Mr. Wiley. May his memory be a blessing to all that knew him.  Mike Jarrell

As others have said, Rodger was a special person who will be greatly missed by many people.  When Bob and I joined the Camp Wiley tailgate years ago, Rodger was there to greet us and give us a hearty Aggie welcome to the tailgate he founded.  One could see instantly the love he had for TAMU, his family, friends and good food. We were fortunate to hear interesting stories and adventures of his time attending the school he dearly loved.

Mr Wiley touched so many young folks in a positive way.  He was a coach and a drill a sergeant with a smile.  He inspired us to do our best.  I am glad he led a long and happy life.  I’m sorry I missed visiting with Mr Wiley before he died.  His image remains in my mind just as he looked from 1960 to 1963 at O. Henry Jr HS

I cannot begin to tell you all the memories and wonderful times I had with your parents! Mr. Wiley wrote a recommendation for me with my first teaching job in Austin! He gave me great advice and I loved going to their house to visit!  Again, he was one of my favorite Dads of our friends growing up!

Tim, Deanne and entire Wiley family, please accept our deepest sympathy and condolences, at the passing of Roger. Take comfort in the thoughts and prayers of so many that he touched. Mr. Wiley always met you with that big broad smile. He was a loving, caring, warm, generous and principled man that you always felt comfortable around. He epitomized and lived the "Aggie Core Values" continuing his love for the university.  May God's Grace comfort you all.

Rodger was a very good man and a wonderful brother.  

He and his late wife, Novella Hibler Wiley, had a long and fruitful life together, both from large close families.  

Their legacy lives on through their son Tim and his family.

He has now joined the rest of our family in Heaven.
