Mrs. Porfiria Hernandez Porfiria was born to Concepcion Ramos and Alberto Hernandez in Rockdale, TX on Sept. 15, 1921. She peacefully passed on July 18, 2005 in Austin. She was 83 years old. A strong woman of humble origins who supported and raised her large family following the death of her husband Anastacio Hernandez in 1961, Porfiria labored many years at Matt's El Rancho restaurant and reared 15 children teaching the value of hard work and never complaining of her lot dealt in life. Her lifelong faith in the Catholic Church and her love of gardening-her green thumb was legendary-were among the many traits passed on to the next generations. Her primary caretakers in the final years had been her daughters Guadalupe and Bertha, and her son Richard, whose love and support were bolstered by the many visits and care given by her children and grandchildren. Our family believes we have been blessed to have had these many years to show her our love and thanks for her hard work in raising her children and grandchildren to the best of her humble ability. In honor of her life and the love we have for her, we will pray a rosary at 7 p.m.Thursday at Wilke-Clay-Fish, 2620 S. Congress, followed by worship and praise at 8 p.m. Please come to share in her funeral mass on Friday, July 22 at 10 a.m. at San Jose Catholic Church, 2435 Oak Crest, in Austin. Internment at Assumption Cemetery will follow. She will be laid to rest next to her son John Hernandez and grandson Michael Hernandez and near her daughter Mary Louise Hernandez.
