Nelda Sue McAnulty Walker was born October 21, 1921 on a farm in an area of Milam County Texas called Bryant Station. She died January 19, 2016 in Austin, Texas. Nelda was the youngest of fourteen children born to Bailey Bartow McAnulty and Addie Victoria Mann McAnulty. She attended a one room school at Bryant Station until high school. The nearest high school was in Cameron where she attended and eventually became a proud graduate of Cameron Yoe High School. After graduation she moved to Austin where she took a job at the Texas Tea House on the UT Campus. While there she agreed to a blind date with a tire-man/pool hustler named Odis whom she later married. The union lasted over 70 years.
Nelda had powerful influences in her early life that shaped her permanently. Her strong Christian faith came from a Christian mother and grandmother who instilled in her values that made her such a kind, gentle, meek and loving person. She and Odis were very active at the Northside Church of Christ (now called Hyde Park) for over 50 years. The other influence was the poverty she experienced early in life. Although the financial situation improved significantly in her adult life she was always thrifty, modest, and content with what she had. When asked this past Christmas if there was something we could get her, the answer was “prayers”.
Nelda was predeceased by her husband Odis and her youngest son Lee. She is survived by daughter-in-law Sue M. Walker, son Roy Walker, son Wayne Walker and wife Regan. She had seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren who all miss their “Mimi” greatly.
Funeral services will be conducted at two o’clock in the afternoon on Sunday, the 24th of January 2016, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 North Lamar Boulevard, Austin, Texas.
