Gladys Marie Howard was born October 11, 1918 to the union of Mr. Lonnie B. Grant and Mrs. Ola Mae Grant in Buda, Texas. She was the eighth of fifteen children. Gladys accepted Christ at an early age at Center Union Baptist Church in Buda, Texas. She later joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Austin, Texas where she was an active member on the Usher board until her health declined. She had a love for gospel music, gardening, ceramic making, drawing, and quilting. Her family remembers her as a wonderful cook whose fried corn was a favorite for many. She enjoyed order and beauty, loved to decorate, and kept an impeccable household. Her strength of character and strong determination will continue to serve as a role model for her family for generations to come. In her later years as her health declined she continued to receive loving attention with visits from her children, many of her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family members. She was preceded in death by: her husband, Jessie James Howard; two children, Anderson Howard and Nathaniel Howard Sr.; sisters, Lorene Dawson, Larene Grant, Emma Lyons, Cora Davis, Fannie Williams, Annie Spruell, Mary Etta Loggins, and Lillie Grant; brothers, Rev. Willie B. Grant, Oscar Grant, Arthur Grant, Leroy Grant, and James Grant. She leaves to cherish her memory: one sister, Lola Fleming; four daughters, Ola Mae Howard, Gladys Marie Hale (James), Jeannie Nunn, Delores "Lois" Howard; four sons, James M. Howard (Grace), Tommy Howard, David Howard Sr. and Harold Howard Sr.; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
