Born on June 23, 1954, Mary Jo Gilbert was known for her incredibly loving spirit, making others feel loved, cared for and valued - and she always told the best stories about her friends & family. She had an extraordinary way of striking up a conversation and building long-lasting relationships with anyone around her, and she filled our lives with love, memories and an abundance of laughter. She lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; chatting with friends and family and most of all, spending her days on the golf course, which became therapeutic for her during her illness.
Mary Jo will be greatly missed by those who knew her most and loved her captivating personality. Born in Dallas, Texas to Margaret & Otis D. Gilbert, Mary Jo grew up with her 6 siblings in Dallas, until moving to Killeen. After graduating from Killeen High School, Mary Jo went on to serve in the military, where she was an attack helicopter mechanic for 4 years. After completing her time in the military, she remained in the Reserves for two more years. Mary Jo soon began working for Travis County Sheriff's office and became a Lieutenant during her time there. She was very proud of her work and the time she spent at the Sheriff's office, which allowed her to make countless friends who became extended family to her.
Mary Jo was preceded in death by her father Otis D. Gilbert, her mother Margaret, brothers Franklin Pierce Gilbert & William Landon Gilbert Sr. and a nephew, Clifford Poe III.
Survivors include: her forever friend, Sheila Garcia, her four devoted siblings - brothers: Robert Otis Gilbert of Hamilton Texas, Francis N. Gilbert of Springtown, Texas, James Scott Gilbert, Donald (Tommy) Gilbert and wife Brenda, of Killeen and sister-in-law Valerie Gilbert, of Belton, Texas (wife of her late brother William). Mary Jo was also the loving aunt to many nieces & nephews as well.
As much as our beloved Mary Jo will be missed here on Earth, we take comfort in knowing that she is resting in the arms of the Lord.
Mary Jo will be laid to rest with Military Honors at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen Texas in a private ceremony with family.
