Mary Franklyn Chapman Friou died peacefully at Westminster Manor on Sept. 4, 2013, at the age of 94. She was born in Austin, Texas on Dec. 7, 1918 to William Mason Chapman and Ola Upchurch Chapman. She grew up in Leander, Texas and graduated from Leander High School. She attended The University of Texas at Austin where she earned a degree in business administration. While at UT, she met her husband of 67 years, C.L. Friou .
Mary had a long and successful career in the UT Austin Department of Accounting, where she made life-long friendships.
Mary was an avid gardener and an exceptionally talented needlepointer. She loved spending time at her family ranch where she grew up. She adored her three grandchildren, and seeing them always brought a smile to her face. Mary was a spunky little lady with a big heart, and she will truly be missed.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, John Mason Chapman, and her husband, C.L. Friou. She is survived by her two sons, John Mason Friou and his wife Diane Dialessi Friou, and Thomas Claborne Friou and his wife Ann Wheelock Friou, all of Austin. Also left to cherish her memories are her grandchildren Melissa Ann Friou of New York City, and Mason Chapman Friou and Benjamin Wheelock Friou, both of Austin. Mary is also survived by two nephews: Jack Kellam and his wife Candy, and Ross Friou; and by two nieces, Jean Kellam, and Norma Friou Fouts and her husband Lou, all of Dallas.
The family expresses deep appreciation to the staff at Westminster Manor and gives special thanks to Mary’s caregivers Linda Flores, Martelle Luedecke, Maria Beistline and Elizabeth Flores for their compassionate care, tireless efforts, and friendship.
Visitation will be at Cook Walden Funeral Home at 6100 North Lamar Blvd. from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013. Funeral services will be held at Cook Walden at 1 p.m. followed by interment at Bagdad Cemetery in Leander.
