Mary Alice Alvarez passed away peacefully surrounded by many members of her family on Sunday, Nov. 10, one week shy of her 99th birthday. She was born, went to school, worked, and lived in Austin her entire life.
Mary is survived by her sister Cecilia Jo Alvarez of Austin; her nieces Jo Scribner and her son Christopher Scribner; Jo Diane Spears and her husband Robert Spears and their children Matthew, Daniel (Sarah) and Rachel (Patrick Dempewolff). Other surviving family members include Sandra Longcrier, wife of Mary's deceased nephew Donald and their children Antoinette and Elizabeth (Brandon Jack). Mary leaves behind four great-great nephews and nieces, Christian, Cayden, Benjamin and Michael.
She also was preceded in death by her mother Carlotta (Resendez), father Joe Alvarez, and four sisters, Zelma, Bea, Dora, and Gloria.
Mary worked at F.W. Woolworth in downtown Austin for 35 years and in administration at the Austin Independent School District for 11 years. She loved travel, Longhorn football, Dallas Cowboy football, and working puzzle books.
The family would like to thank all of Mary's doctors and their staff at Round Rock Hospital, at The Isle at Cedar Ridge assisted living, and at Resolutions Hospice for their care, concern, and kindness during her last few weeks.
A viewing and celebration of life service will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 25, at 6100 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78752.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to St. Austin Catholic Church.
