Bud, as he was always known, grew up in Colon, Panama; Fort McKinley, Maine; and Arnold, Missouri. He graduated from Crystal City High School in Arnold, Missouri, and immediately enlisted in the Army. Bud served for 22 years and retired in 1968 as a First Sergeant. His army travels took him to Japan and Germany. He earned several awards and commendations, including Soldier of the Year by the Army Air Defense Command in 1964. He started his second career with Bendix Corporation where he tracked satellites at NASA's Manned Space Flight Tracking Stations in the Canary Islands, Spain, and Quito, Ecuador. His third career brought him home to Texas where he worked for the University of Texas at Austin Graduate School of Business for 12 years. Bud retired from UT in 1989.
Bud was an adventurer who loved to travel and explore, a tinkerer in electronics and computers, an avid reader, and a master puzzler. Lastly he was a life-long learner with a keen and curious mind, and a healthy sense of humor.
Bud Stone was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elsie, and his brother Vernon.
Bud is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Hildegard; his daughters, Donna, Beverly, and Patricia; his grandchildren, Monica, Elena, Daniel, and Michael; and his great grandchildren, Lorenzo, Rebecca, Diana, and Evelyn.
The family would like to thank the staff at Stonebridge Health Center in Austin, TX for the compassion and care they showed Bud in the final months of his life.
A Memorial Service for Bud Stone will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception at noon. Services will be held at Cook Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, 6300 West William Cannon, Austin, TX 78749.
