Martin Andrew Benavidez was born in Odessa, TX in September of 1989, but he got to his weird little city of Austin as quick as he could at the age of 3. He is the beloved son of Jamie Horn Preyer and Michael Benavidez.
Martin is survived by his siblings and best friends; Haley Negron, Sarah Benavidez and Durgon Horn. Martin adored his sons, Jaden who lives in Fairbanks, AK and Zane who lives near Sandy Point, ID. His whole world revolved around his baby boys and they changed his life for the better. His nieces, Noelle and Drea, and his nephews Cruz, Abram, Adrian and Miles brought him endless joy.
His life ended with his loving girlfriend, Sarah Cantu, by his side.
Martin had a strong attraction to music and art and always displayed incredible talent in both. He was a self-taught pianist and artist as well as one of the greatest comedians of all time.
Before he started kindergarten Martin could mimic Michael Jackson's iconic moves. He also had a goldfish, named Michael Jackson, who washed down a bathtub drain while Martin exclaimed, 'there goes Michael Jackson!' Every roly-poly he found, he named Michael Jackson. He was obsessed with MJ’s: Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan and Mary Jane. Later in life his musical tastes changed to Linkin Park and the great Chester Bennington. Martin's dance talent was not limited to MJ moves. He could glow- stick and spin fire with the best of them.
Martin never met a stranger. He was part of a clan who loved graffiti, all things fire, music and skateboarding. Don't tell anyone but he may have a little graffiti of his own around Austin and Odessa. “Kinda Sorta Mabi” was his tag. If you see it around town, blow Martin a kiss.
Martin never met a stranger and loved people. He had the gift of being able to connect with anyone and his friendships usually lasted a lifetime. Spending time with Martin meant feeling welcomed and valued and like you would never stop laughing. Martin was the great entertainer and it's possible that he has never posed seriously for a picture.
Most of all Martin was hilarious. He had the quickest wit and could riff off of anyone. He and his siblings could spend hours making each other laugh. Watching them together was a joy. His Slingblade, De Niro and “Dumb and Dumber” impressions were iconic. He adored South Park and the Book of Mormon musical. Trey Parker and Matt Stone were his heroes.
Martin would have liked to be remembered as a gentle soul who loved his friends and family and wished nothing but good things for them. He just wanted to make people happy and never knew how special he was. He was a great man with incredible talents who was adored by so many people. His ability to master anything creative or kinetic was only surpassed by his ability to spread joy and love to everyone he ever met. He will be greatly missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, Grandparents, godmothers and innumerable friends. RIP sweet Martin. Until we meet again.
A visitation for Martin will be held Tuesday, October 25, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Weed-Corley-Fish South Chapel, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
